A petition launched by Tendring Pensioners Action Group and supported by Clacton Labour Party has received over 3000 signatures. Clacton Labour Party are now planning a major protest march in Clacton for 25th February.
The petition calls for the Clacton Minor Injuries Unit to be Saved. Its closure is one option in the current consultation with North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group, who are holding consultation meetings around the district. TenPAG, who are non-party political, started the petition in January to support their case that the MIU at Clacton and Harwich should be retained and the services improved.
TenPAG held a protest with the Labour Party outside the Weeley Council offices in January, and since then Labour volunteers have been helping us collect signatures and hand out leaflets about the consultations. Now they are organising a big march along Clacton Sea Front in support of the MIU.
Labour Party Press Officer Su Butcher explained. “The March has been inspired by the depth of feeling shown at our recent petitioning sessions. We want to give people the chance to make their feelings known. We’ve been in touch with the District Council and the Police and they are supportive, so we’re now putting the final plans in place.”
Everyone is invited to come on the march and bring their own banners and placards. Marchers will assemble on the Sea Front at Victoria Road from 11.30 am on 25th February. “We will march down the seafront and past the hospital to the Martello Coach and Caravan Park, for speeches” said Mrs Butcher. “The only reason the MIU is threatened is because of Tory Cuts. A Labour Government started the NHS, and the Labour Party is the only party dedicated to ending the creeping privatisation that is running down our local services and putting people in danger,” she said.
