Robert Porter, Essex CC Labour Party Candidate for Clacton East

Dear Elector,

Robert_Porter_Essex_County_Council_250.jpgI am Robert Porter, your Labour Party candidate for Clacton East, and I hope to represent you on Essex County Council after May 4th. I moved here with my wife, Christine, from Sudbury a few years ago, having previously been a Parish Councillor there. I have been a driving instructor for seven years, and before that worked for British Gas and then, after privatisation, for national grid for more than 30 years. I have also been active in my union UNITE. My wife and I live in Viking Way, and would like to play an active role in the community.

Saving the Minor Injuries Unit and the NHS

I am very concerned about the threat to the Minor Injuries Unit here in Clacton. This threat is to do with cuts in the NHS budget and hiving off sections of it, like the MIU, to private companies; something the Conservative Party and UKIP support. This will be an on-going issue, and it has been the Labour Party that has fought to defend our MIU here in Clacton. After all, it was the Labour Party that created the NHS back in 1948 (against Conservative Party opposition) and you can count on Labour to defend it. Next year, the MIU facilities (hopefully still here in Clacton) will be up for privatisation. It will only be the Labour Party opposing this, and I would like, as your Councillor, to add my weight to the campaign to stop this happening.

Re-nationalise the Railway System

The Conservative Party decision to privatise the Railway system has proved disastrous in almost every respect. A future Labour Government will re-nationalise the railways.

Support our Police

I have serious concerns about the Conservative-run County Council putting the street lights out late at night. If elected, I will work to do whatever I can to get them back on again. Lack of police patrols in the area adds to the problem of residents feeling unsafe. Conservative cutbacks in the Police budget have added to this problem. I will fight for more police patrolling the area.

Reduce Dog Fouling

I want to see more done concerning the problem of dog fouling on our paths, the promenade and the beach. I will work for a combination of education and enforcement to reduce the problem.

A Proper Strategy for Housing

Lack of housing, and high private rents for those who cannot afford to buy, is a massive problem. Labour supports a big increase in Council and Social housing to help deal with this problem.

Support our Fire Service

I am totally opposed to the Tory cuts to our Fire service which will leave Clacton with just one full-time fire engine.

Restore School Budgets the Conservatives have Cut

A good fully-rounded education is the right of ALL children. Unlike the Conservatives and UKIP, I am opposed to the segregation of children that the out-dated grammar school system would bring about. I will be fighting with other Labour Councillors on Essex County Council for a restoration of school budgets that the Conservatives have recently cut.
